Spa embezzlement uncovered by AP audit

The former bookkeeper for a spa in Lafayette, Louisiana, was arrested and charged with embezzlement after it was discovered that she had stolen more than $187,000 from her employer.

According to The Associated Press, Angie Normand served as the bookkeeper for the Coccolare Spa from 2007 to 2011. While working at the establishment, she managed to embezzle nearly $187,000 from Coccolare's accounts. After the illegal activity was uncovered by an accounts payable audit, Normand was apprehended and was recently sentenced to 37 months in prison. She has also been ordered to pay back the full amount in restitution, the news source states.

The investigation revealed that Normand wrote checks from Coccolare's accounts to herself, and then deposited them into her own personal accounts, reports The Advocate. She also fraudulently increased her own salary and attempted to hide the illegal activity by covering up her theft within the company's financial records. During the trial, the spa's owner, Cynthia Glass, told the judge that her business was almost near financial ruin when the embezzlement was discovered. After several discrepancies were discovered, the AP audit was launched and found that the approximate total of money stolen was $187,778, states the source.
