Routine AP audit uncovers $63,000 embezzlement

A routine accounts payable audit conducted at a medical center in Beaufort County, South Carolina, revealed that the organization's office manager had embezzled more than $63,000 over a period of three years, the Island Packet reports.

Investigators found that Jeanie Lynn Moore, who had unfettered access to Heritage Medical Center's office payroll and bank account, misappropriated the money by giving herself unapproved wages, according to Robin McIntosh, a spokeswoman from the County Sheriff's Office.

Moore was also in charge of providing cleaning services, for which she was supposed to receive a monthly check. Instead, she billed the medical office several times a month for much more than the agreed-upon amount.

According to McIntosh, the investigation is ongoing and more misappropriation may be uncovered. Regardless, Moore will face a felony charge of breach of trust with fraudulent intent for embezzling more than $10,000 from the organization.

In addition to helping keep finances in order, conducting regular AP audits can also mitigate embezzlement and highlight loose or nonexistent checks and balances that should be addressed in order to lower the risk of misappropriation in the future.
