An AP audit of the Beckham County Rural District in Oklahoma revealed that funds had been embezzled from the organization by a married couple and their daughter.
According to KOCO-TV, Ronnie and Jean West, along with their daughter Sheila Elizondo, are charged with embezzling more than $25,000 from the water district. All three defendants were employed by the organization. Mr. West served as the district's manager for 20 years, while his wife worked as the office manager. Elizondo worked on and off for the company for several years. All three have been fired from their positions, and Mr. and Mrs. West are in police custody. Their daughter is out of the country, states the news source.
Investigators allege that the trio stole money from the water district by writing unauthorized checks from the company's accounts, reports The Oklahomian. They are accused of using Beckham County credit cards to purchase personal items, including electronics, home improvement materials, and gas for vehicles not belonging to the county. The Wests and Elizondo are also accused of taking cash payments from residents that were meant for utility bills.
