The former office manager for the Alexandria Pathology Lab in Alexandria, Louisiana, has been sentenced to 27 months in federal prison after an accounts payable audit revealed she had embezzled more than $350,000 from her employer.
Linda Deselle was accused of wire fraud in November 2011 and pled guilty to the charges in June. Along with her prison sentence, she is also required to pay back the full amount in restitution as well as an $8,000 fine. Deselle conducted the illegal scheme from January 2006 to July 2010 by writing unauthorized checks to herself from the laboratory's accounts. She then would create fraudulent carbon copies of checks and enter them into the financial records as business expenses.
According to Avoyelles Today, Deselle also cashed retirement accounts totalling $87,000 in the few months before she was sentenced. She then either spent the money on personal expenses or gave it to her children. U.S. District Judge Dee Drell stated that these funds could have been used to begin paying restitution. The news source reports that Deselle is facing a separate lawsuit from the two doctors who owned Alexandria Pathology Laboratory.
