Embezzling accountant exposed by AP audit, sentenced to jail time

An accounts payable audit revealed that the former bookkeeper for Norman, Oklahoma-based Quality Plumbing and Heating embezzled more than $455,000 from the company between 2007 and 2010, according to The Norman Transcript.

Amy Joyce Cameron was recently sentenced to 30 months of imprisonment followed by three years of supervised release on charges of embezzling from her employer and money laundering. Additionally, she was ordered to pay restitution for the full sum of the company funds she stole.

Court records indicate that Cameron issued herself checks from bank accounts belonging to the company and then deposited these into a personal bank account and a personal investment account. Her responsibilities at Quality Plumbing and Heating included handling accounts payable and receivable, as well as other duties such as managing payroll and billing accounts, according to the news source. Because of this, she was able to embezzle over a long period of time without piquing suspicions.

The Associated Press reports that Cameron began stealing the money to support a drug habit.
