AP audit uncovers embezzlement by fire department chief, wife

A former fire department chief and his wife are under investigation after an accounts payable audit revealedthe couple allegedly stole more than $100,000 from the organization. Although all of the details surrounding the case have not yet been revealed, it is believed that the two accused individuals carried out their illegal scheme throughout a five-year period.

Larry States served as the chief for the Monterey Volunteer Fire Department in New York and his wife Kimberly worked as the organization’s treasurer, according to WETM-TV. The current research into the financial misappropriation is only looking at the fire department’s records, but there are plans to expand the investigation to the Schuyler County Sheriff’s office, as Larry has served as the sergeant and jail administrator for that department, the source notes.

The Chronicle-Express reports that the States’ used the embezzled funds to pay for a variety of personal purchases and bills, including their home mortgage, cell phones, groceries, vacations and vehicles. Both Larry and Kimberly have been arrested, and they are each facing charges of second and third degree larceny.
